Why Choose Lumina Tutoring
Choosing a tutor is not just about improving grades — it’s about trusting someone with your child’s education, confidence, and well-being. Lumina Tutoring was founded and is led by a BC-certified secondary mathematics teacher with formal training in education, mathematics, and psychology, classroom experience in BC public and private schools, university-level classroom experience, experience writing textbooks, and over two decades of one-to-one tutoring experience. Families choose Lumina because we offer something rare in private tutoring: professional teaching standards, deep subject expertise, and a student-first approach delivered by an experienced female educator.
Certified Teacher, Not Just a Tutor
Many tutors know the material. Fewer know how to teach it. At Lumina, your child works with a professionally trained teacher who has:
-
A Bachelor of Education in Secondary Mathematics (UBC)
-
A Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics & Psychology (UBC)
-
2 Master’s-level studies in Mathematics (Open University UK & University of Waterloo)
-
Experience teaching Math K–12, Pre-Calculus, Calculus I-IV, and Science in BC classrooms
-
University teaching and curriculum development experience
-
Experience writing Math textbooks ~ Math K - 12, Calculus I - IV, and more...
This means lessons are aligned with the BC curriculum, learning gaps are properly identified, instruction is structured, evidence-based, and effective, and you will be properly prepared for Univiersity or any standardized test.
Safety, Comfort & Professional Standards
Parents deserve peace of mind. As a certified teacher and female educator who has worked extensively with children ane adolescents, Lumina Tutoring prioritizes student comfort, safety, and professionalism at every stage, including:
-
Clear boundaries and respectful communication
-
Transparent progress updates for parents
-
Structured lessons with defined learning goals
-
A calm, supportive learning environment
-
Sensitivity to student confidence, anxiety, and individual needs
Many families tell us they value the reassurance of working with an experienced female teacher who understands both the academic and emotional side of learning during the high-school years.
Expert Navigation of the School System & Proficiency Scale
Modern grading and assessment can be confusing for families — especially with BC’s proficiency scale, changing curriculum language, and varying expectations between schools and programs. As a classroom teacher, long-time tutor, curriculum developer, and former Director of Education, I understand exactly how both public and private school systems operate, how students are assessed, and how academic decisions are made behind the scenes. This allows me to support families in ways that go far beyond homework help, including:
-
Interpreting the BC proficiency scale clearly and accurately
-
Identifying what grades and feedback truly mean for university pathways
-
Aligning tutoring goals with classroom expectations and curriculum standards
-
Communicating professionally with teachers, counsellors, and administrators when appropriate
-
Supporting IEP planning and academic accommodations
-
Helping families advocate effectively for their child’s needs
-
Guiding course selection and long-term academic planning
-
Parents often tell me that this guidance alone reduces stress and uncertainty — because they finally feel they understand the system and have an experienced professional in their corner. At Lumina Tutoring, you are not just hiring a tutor. You are gaining an experienced educational advocate who knows how schools work, how decisions are made, and how to help your child navigate them confidently and successfully.

My Story
I knew I wanted to work with kids when I was just six years old—and that dream has guided me for more than 25 years. My experience in special education and mental health, along with my mental health certificate, allows me to support students not just academically, but emotionally too, even in moments of crisis.
Over 20 years ago, I started Lumina Tutoring with a simple mission: to make math approachable, fun, and completely do-able. I wanted every student to feel that “aha!” moment, where frustration turns into understanding, fear turns into confidence, and hopelessness turns into empowerment.
Working with youth and adolescents is my passion. I love seeing students discover their strengths, build confidence, and realize that challenges aren’t obstacles—they’re opportunities. At Lumina Tutoring, we focus on more than just math. We create a safe, supportive space where curiosity thrives, confidence grows, and learning becomes an exciting journey.
Every student has unique potential, and I’m here to help them unlock it—one lesson, one breakthrough, one success at a time.
